He is widely regarded as one of America’s leading experts on Saudi Arabia where he spent 15 years working at the Embassy in Riyadh as well as the Consulates in Jeddah and Dhahran. He is the author of Vision or Mirage, Saudi Arabia at the Crossroads. His diplomatic assignments in Saudi Arabia included: Chief of Mission, Charge d’Affaires, Deputy Chief of Mission, Political Counselor, Economic Counselor, Commercial Counselor, and Commercial Attaché. This is a unique record of specialization for an American diplomat, not only in Saud Arabia but in any country. His other Foreign Service assignments included: Washington, Bahrain, Syria, Tunisia, and the United Arab Emirates. He holds a B.A. from Colgate and M.Phil. from Oxford.
